The last 18 months have been the most challenging in payroll history, with the implementation of the Government’s Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (CJRS) falling to payroll professionals, those working in the industry have been working long hours to ensure that payments, and claims, have been made accurately and on time. In addition, many payroll departments had to work remotely which brought about challenges with technology and systems that have had to be overcome.

As we come out of the pandemic and into the ‘new normal’ with a mix of office, remote and ‘hybrid’ working, new challenges are being faced. Payroll professionals need to consider tax implications for employees working abroad where they have been able to work remotely outside of the UK. Consideration is being given to the future of Cycle to Work Schemes now that more employees can work remotely, or flexibly and many payroll departments are reviewing their payroll software and moving to cloud based solutions so that they can work outside of the office environment.
